Hey everyone, and welcome back to the blog! November has gotten a lot colder, and it’s been so busy – there’s been Bonfire Night and firework parties, family birthday’s, as well as teaching and writing assignments at university. With it coming up to Christmas, I’ve been trying to curb my spending, but I did find a few bargains! So without further ado, lets begin and fair warning, there may be spoilers.
The first book I was gifted this month was from my boyfriend, and that was the hardback edition of Heroes by Stephen Fry. This is a companion to Mythos, which collects Greek myths and legends, written in an adult style. Heroes collects many heroic men and women, such as Jason and the Golden Fleece, and the Twelve Labours of Heracles. I’m very excited for this, I’m sure it’s going to be so entertaining!
The first hardback book I bought this month was Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald – The Original Screenplay by J. K. Rowling. I preordered this book, so I could get it on release day. This is the screenplay for the second film in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, featuring the script and a few additional pieces of information. Set in 1926, a few months after the first film, villain Grindelwald breaks loose from custody, and sets out to gather followers. Albus Dumbledore of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry enlists the help of magizoologist and former student, Newt Scamander to help bring the villain in… The cover is by MinaLima, and is completely gorgeous! I’m looking forward to seeing the film this month as part of my boyfriend’s birthday present, so I resisted reading this for at least a few days! This retailed at £8.49 when I preordered.
The first eBook I bought this month was Onyx & Ivory by Mindee Arnett, the first book in the Rime Chronicles. This is a YA fantasy, and was released earlier this year, so it’s still a fairly new book. This follows Kate Brighton, who is nicknamed Traitor Kate after her father tried to assassinate the high king of Rime. Kate works for the royal courier service, all the while hiding her forbidden magic, which allows her to influence the minds of animals and dragons… When her magic leads her to a massacred caravan, she finds the lone survivor, Corwin Tormaine, the son of the king, and her first love that she has sworn to forget. Their paths cross and now they must put the past behind them to face the threats that stir in their kingdom… This sounds so good – I’m excited to see some more dragons and drakes in YA fantasy. I’m completely down for magic, monsters and romance, so this sounds perfect! At the time of purchase, this was £1.99.
The next eBook I bought this month was A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir, which is the second book in the Ember Quartet YA fantasy series. Following on from the events of the previous book, Laia and Elias must ready themselves to outfox their enemies and confront their hearts while the Empire tries to continue its harrowing rule… I loved the first book in the series, so I’m hoping this doesn’t suffer from second-book-syndrome. I’m really excited to see characters progress and also see more of the world. At the time of purchase, this was 99p.
The third eBook I bought was Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager, an adult psychological thriller. During Emma’s first summer from home, three of her new friends went to the woods and never came back. Years later, Emma returns to Camp Nightingale, the scene of the crime, to face her past… I loved Riley Sager’s debut novel, so I’ve got my fingers crossed for this one! At the time of purchase, this was £1.99.
The final eBook I picked up was The Girl Before by JP Delaney, another adult psychological thriller. This follows Jane as she moves to Folgate Street, a place with a long list of rules. After moving in, Jane learns that the previous tenant mysteriously died. Is Jane’s story going to go the same way? I’ve heard good things about this for a debut novel, and it’s going to be made into a movie too! At the time of purchase, this was £1.99.
So that completes my November haul! Have you read any of these books? Let me know in the comments below!
